To play along, you don't have to create a layered file, because the file I used already contained layers. Understanding Layers The layers used in Photoshop are essentially folders, and the layers are where you store your images and edits. If you're using a layered document, the layers you create are the folders for the files you create. If you're not using a layered file, you still can create layers that act like folders. The layers are loaded into a catalog or file, which may be called a document or a project. Each layer is a layer within your project. When you're using a layered document, the layers are stored sequentially — that is, the first layer is on top. By default, Photoshop loads your layers from top to bottom.
